Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Tasked with visualising the key themes within Stephen Sondheim’s play Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979), I collaboratively created imagery that depicts a figure being smothered by a reaching hand, symbolic of the revenge fueled events that occur throughout the play.
A poster and media kit booklet was then designed featuring this imagery - the binding of the booklet holds great significance to themes and events within the play, Todd’s life is ripped away from him while his acts of vengeance involve brutally slitting peoples throats. To first open this booklet the viewer must reenact these actions by tearing along the perforated cover’s fore-edge. When the reader wishes to extract the calendar from the booklet, they must do this by essentially dismantling the booklet’s binding, again reminiscent of Todd’s manic and unraveled life.
